March 2014

Here's to a Fab 2014!

2014 is racing away from us already, but what a fantastic two months we've had here at The Wardrobe!

Our hardworking staff have undertaken a huge clean out and reorganisation of the warehouse over the past two months in preparation for some exciting new shipments.

Over the next few weeks, boxes of new stock from the US are being unpacked and we can't wait to show it all off!
Included are some delicious new pieces of costume jewellery, showgirl headdresses, and a new range of shoes and boots to complement our most popular costumes: Glam Rock, 1960's, 1920's, ladies boots, pirate boots and more!
We are also anticipating some creative new makeup and moustaches.

Nothing beats a solid "spring" clean and we always dedicate the first few months of a new year to ensuring our warehouse is looking spick and span.
Our staff are very excited about the new layout of ladies retro section. We have extended our 60's, 70's and 80's gear over several racks and now have plenty of room to bring some of our treasured retro goodies out of storage.

We have also given a bit of love to our collection of antique and groovy ties, all of which are now hanging (in colour order of course) on what we are calling the "Tie Wall".

But, the biggest job we have undertaken in the past two months is the mammoth task of implementing standard ladies sizing on all of our women's clothing.
As you can understand, this is a huge task and we are hoping that it will provide instant visual cue so we can all find what we are looking for amongst the thousands of costumes.

So from all of us here at The Wardrobe, Happy 2014 and we hope to see you all very soon!

Christmas 2013

SANTA & HIS HELPERS!

Here at The Wardrobe, we have over 20 beautiful Santa costumes in residence as well as a multitude of Elves, Santa's Helpers, two Reindeer, Mrs Claus and even a Snowman!

As the silly season is nearly upon us, we thought you may have some questions regarding our hire policy on Christmas themed costumes. So here it is, our definitive guide to Santa:

Hiring Christmas themed costumes over the November to December period is strictly over night.
Unfortunately as our Christmas costumes are in such high demand over the Festive Season we have to enforce this so other customers don't miss out on having Santa appear at their event!

Santa hire is $100 for an afternoon pickup, full day hire and drop off before 12am the following day. We are opening earlier over the festive season FOR SANTA RETURNS ONLY, Santas may return from 9am - 12am.

Please understand we are formally closed between 9am - 10am, this is a convienience reserved for our Santa costume returns only. Please discuss this with your friendly wardrobe staff member upon hire so we can expect an early before-business-hours return!

Our Santa's come with a beautiful 3 piece red suit with luscious white fur lining, thick black belt, santa padding (for those Santa's who can't provide their own jolly belly), wig, beard, white gloves, spectacles, bell, present sack and either a pair of white fur trimmed boots (size and availability permitting) or a pair of white fur trimmed over boots.

Please check our gallery of Christmas Elves and assorted Christmas characters below to get an idea of what we can do.
Elves are generally $65 for an overnight hire and look lovely helping Santa out. Yet again, take a peek a our gallery as there are lots of different elf options.

If you would love Santa and his helpers to make an appearance at your next party, Christmas lunch or general shindig, please contact us or drop in as soon as possible to ensure your preferred costume isn't snapped up!

Halloween 2013

We are getting excited about halloween here at the wardrobe!

If you are wondering what to be this year, we have an extensive list of costume ideas to check out as well as DIY makeup tutorials that we featured last year.

Just remember, your makeup is the best part of your costume on Halloween, you can make any one of our costumes frightening with the right accessories.

Our favourite Halloween costumes also happen to have amazing makeup, read on for some inspiration and flick through the photos below for examples.

Sugar Skulls

The Mexican Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the dead) Sugar Skulls are a beautiful spin on the halloween spirit, a celebration of life and death.

LADIES: Pair your sugar skull make up with a colourful, floaty flamenco skirt, brightly patterned crop top (check out our range of tops to match our saris - these are perfect!) and a crown of our floral wreaths. Go to town with accessories too, instead of a flowers in your hair, try one of our mantillas (black lace veils) don't forget to load up on bracelets and necklaces!

GENTLEMEN:Think mariachi band styling with Dia de los Muertos makeup. Try one of our cropped matador jackets with black trousers, a cummerbund, collared shirt and either a skinny tie or a Kentucky bow tie. Don't forget a black, flat brimmed zorro-esque hat or black top hat, you can adorn these with flowers or bones for an added element of the macabre!
If donning the full sugar skull makeup isn't really your speed, come on in and snap up one of our Dias De Las Muertos facial tattoos, it lasts much longer than face paint and you need not worry about your face rubbing off during all your frivolities on halloween!

Zombies and Skeletons

Zombies and Skeletons are our staple costumes over Halloween, get in quick if you want to reserve a lycra skeleton jumpsuit (only a limited number!) makeup kits are available for purchase as well as a huge selection of masks for hire. If you are contemplating being a zombie or Frankenstien's monster this year for halloween, come and peruse our selection of rag costumes before you rip up and ruin your own clothes. Our 'distressed" range of costumes are professionally shredded and dyed for your convenience.

Zombies and skeletons are all about the makeup, masks work well when you don't want to put in all the effort, but who wears a mask for more than a few photos on the night anyway? Try going to town with your make up this year and not worry about heavy, sweaty plastic covering up your face.

We have the most amazing special effects makeup inspired in stock now! Whether you want bolts sticking out of your neck, a cut throat or decaying cheeks these Special FX makeup kits make professional gore makeup as easy as applying a temporary tattoo, just follow the instructions on the back of the pack.

Greyscale

The current trend of greyscale makeup (as seen in TV series "Community") looks absolutely amazing in photos - choose your clothing wisely as this halloween option only works when the clothing is exclusively black, white or shades of grey.

I recommend flicking through The Wardrobe's 1920's, 1930's and 1950's selection of vintage pieces to recreate this Film Noir style.

Apply a thin layer of grey body paint over your exposed skin, don a black wig and smack on some black lipstick, you will look as if you have walked out of a black and white movie. A very classy look for wanna be Private Eyes and Dames.

Just remember to ask a staff member about the product you are using if you plan on getting trigger happy with fake blood or makeup - many of our pieces are very precious and require specialised cleaning. Home made fake blood is more often than not a no no, as it if not water based and will stain our garments. If in doubt, we are always happy to answer any questions!

1970's Tips & Tricks

the 1970's is an enduringly popular theme for parties, doesn't matter the generation, everybody seems to love a throw back to the time when flares, hair, fondue and disco were big. be it a nostalgic or kitsch, make sure you get your styling right at your next 70's themed event.

Ladies:

HAIR: Hair was BIG or long and natural, bust out your hairspray and some curlers for big, softly tousled curls, ala Charlies Angels diva Farrah Fawcet, or Wonder Woman sensation, Lynda Carter.
Another popular cut was of course the shag, perfect for women who already have layering in their hair. Check out Frida, the poster girl of the 70's sensation ABBA, or Carol Brady, both iconic wearers of the flicked out shag style.
Last but definitely not least, why not indulge your inner soul sista and don an afro for the evening? the ultimate style in terms of height and curl make this trend iconic for any woman wishing to embrace a night of disco-dancing-saturday-night-fever-partying.

MAKEUP: If hair was big in the 70's, makeup was more subtle. Pastels where all the rage, pale blue or gold shimmering eyelids teamed with pale pink lipstick and blush. Fake eyelashes where hugely popular in this era, if you have never applied them before, check out this quick video tutorial on how to apply the full set. They look fantastic and trust me, if applied right will not hurt to take off!

ACCESSORIZING: A tricky subject in 70's styling, as it always depends on the outfit. One can never go wrong with a large pair of hoop earrings.
Here at the Wardrobe, we have numerous styles to choose from and disco balls are always a popular choice.
Necklaces will depend on the outfit, long, pendant styles are simple and elegant, however the bold metal choker with a large medallion looks amazing with a low cut disco dress and adds a real feature piece to your look.

SHOES: why not don a strappy heel or a wooden wedge platform for a more authentic 1970's look. Here at The Wardrobe we have dozens of glitzy heels perfect for tearing up the dance floor!
If you feel as if you can't get past a pair of knee high boots, come on in and try a pair of sequin boots, we have pink, silver and gold currently in stock. Please always give us a call to check availability in your preferred colour and size.

Gentlmen:

HAIR: Gentlemen are not exempt from the big hair craze that struck in the 70's! Long plaited hippy hair, floppy ABBA-esque dos and the bowl cut are perfect for gentlemen who are ready to don their platform shoes and dance the night away! The Afro is another popular choice for 70's men, and never forget the fashion of hair extends below the hairline to full mustaches, beards and yes, chest hair (it was a thing). If you are not a particularly hairy man, come on in and check out our range of wigs, fake mustaches, beards and chest hair.

ACCESSORIZING: Have you thought of throwing a big fake gold necklace over your unbuttoned shirt and fake (or real) chest hair? well you probably should!

SHOES: What can we say about mens shoes? PLATFORMS! you need them! we have lots of colours and sizes to choose from, including the crowd pleasing "Aquarium plats" with real water and a fake fish in the heel. Always a hilarious option! If you find yourself unable to stomach (or walk in) this iconic 70's trend, why not try a pair of the wardrobe's cowboy boots? Or our new sparkly pointed boots? They look amazing poking out from underneath a pair of retro flares.

Still feeling uninspired for your 1970's theme? check out some of these original 70's photos or give us a call!

Shoes: keep it classy and understated, dress shoes are a must! If you don't own a pair check out The Wardrobe's collection of black
and white wing tipped shoes, perfect with a classic black and white pinstripe suit.

Over 40 new corsets have arrived at The Wardrobe from the States.

With our jam packed warehouse already groaning at the seams we have cleared just enough room for a new Burlesque section!

Whether you want to be a buxom buccaneer, Marie Antoinette, a cheeky burlesque beauty, a vampy dominatrix or a saucy pinup
we can help, with sizes ranging from 6 to 20!

Check out the photos and then come on in and get laced into one today!
